According to one study, bromeliads can remove up to 80% of six different VOCs, including flame retardants, from the air inside a 76-liter (20-gallon) container. Bromeliads are good at removing toxic chemicals from the air because they have stiff leaves and large spiky flowers that can absorb pollutants through their pores.

Bromeliads are also easy to propagate by removing and potting up their pups, which are small plants that grow from the base of the parent plant. Bromeliads prefer warm temperatures, high humidity, and bright, indirect light.
