Growing Snow Peas from Seed
Learn how to plant, trellis, and harvest sweet snow peas in your Harrisburg garden.
Harrisburg Snow Pea Calendar
Spring Planting
As soon as soil can be worked, 4-6 weeks before last frost
Fall Planting
For autumn harvest, 10-12 weeks before first frost
Harvest Window
Spring crop • Fall: Sept 15 - Oct 15
Harrisburg Pro Tip
Snow peas thrive in our cool springs and can handle light frosts. Plant as soon as soil reaches 45°F (usually mid-March). For continuous harvest, make succession plantings every 2 weeks until early May.
Choosing Your Snow Pea Varieties
Select varieties that perform well in Harrisburg's climate:
Dwarf/Bush Types
Compact plants (18-24") that don't need staking. Perfect for containers. Examples: Dwarf Grey Sugar, Little Marvel.
Tall/Vining Types
Require trellises (5-6 feet), higher yield. Examples: Mammoth Melting Sugar, Oregon Sugar Pod II.
Days to Maturity
Early varieties: 55-60 days • Mid-season: 60-70 days. Choose early varieties for spring planting before heat arrives.
Soil Preparation & Planting
Soil Requirements
- pH: 6.0-7.0 (slightly acidic to neutral)
- Texture: Well-draining, loamy soil
- Amendments: Add compost or aged manure before planting
- Location: Full sun (6+ hours) in spring, partial shade acceptable for fall crop
- Temperature: Soil temp 45-75°F for germination
Planting Instructions
- Direct sowing only: Snow peas don't transplant well
- Planting depth: 1-1.5 inches deep
- Spacing: 2 inches apart in rows 18-24 inches apart
- Succession planting: Sow every 2 weeks for continuous harvest
- Inoculate seeds: Use pea/bean inoculant for better nitrogen fixation
Soil Tip for Harrisburg
Our clay soil benefits from raised beds for snow peas. Add organic matter and sand to improve drainage. Snow peas fix their own nitrogen, so avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers.
Trellising & Support Systems
A-Frame Trellis
Easy to build, provides excellent support for vining varieties.
Pea Netting
Attach to fence or posts. Great for small spaces.
Brush/Twig Support
Natural look, provides perfect climbing surface.
String Trellis
Simple vertical strings between top and bottom supports.
Install trellises at planting time to avoid disturbing roots later. For dwarf varieties, a simple 12-18" support is sufficient.
Care During Growing Season
Watering Schedule
1 inch of water per week. Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water at soil level to prevent fungal diseases.
Mulching
Apply 2-3 inches of straw or shredded leaves after plants are 4-6 inches tall. Conserves moisture, keeps roots cool, suppresses weeds.
Fertilizing
Snow peas fix nitrogen. Use low-phosphorus fertilizer if needed. Side dress with compost when plants begin to flower.
Temperature Management
Ideal growing temp: 55-70°F. Use shade cloth if temperatures exceed 80°F. Frost protection not needed for established plants.
Harrisburg Pest & Disease Control
Common Issues in Our Area
- Pea Aphids: Blast with water, use insecticidal soap, encourage ladybugs
- Pea Weevils: Use floating row covers, rotate crops
- Powdery Mildew: Common in humid PA summers. Plant resistant varieties, ensure good air circulation
- Root Rot: Improve drainage, avoid overwatering
- Birds: Use netting to protect seedlings
Harrisburg-specific: Our humid summers favor powdery mildew. Plant early to avoid peak humidity, choose resistant varieties, and space plants properly for air circulation.
Harvesting & Storage
When to Harvest
- Timing: 55-70 days after planting, when pods are flat and peas barely visible
- Frequency: Harvest every 1-2 days to encourage more production
- Method: Use two hands - hold vine with one, pick pod with the other
- Best time: Morning after dew dries, when sugar content is highest
Storage & Preservation
- Refrigeration: Store in plastic bag for 5-7 days
- Freezing: Blanch for 2 minutes, cool, freeze on trays
- Eating fresh: Best within 24 hours of picking
- Leaving on vine: Pods left too long become tough and stringy
Succession Planting Schedule
Season Extension & Crop Rotation
Extending the Season
- Spring: Use row covers for early planting
- Summer: Plant in partial shade, use shade cloth
- Fall: Use row covers to protect from early frosts
- Container growing: Move containers to cooler spots as temperatures rise
Crop Rotation & Soil Health
Snow peas are excellent for soil improvement:
- Fix nitrogen in soil for next crop
- Rotate with heavy feeders like tomatoes or corn
- Don't plant peas in same spot for 3-4 years
- Chop plants into soil after harvest to add organic matter
